What is Cranio Sacral Therapy
It is a gentle hands-on treatment that frees restricted motion of the bones of the skull, vertebral column and pelvis by working with the natural rhythm of the Cerebral Spinal Fluid moving from the brain down the spinal cord to the sacrum and back up to the brain. The practitioner tunes into that rhythm and assists any spinal and joint imbalances to regain their proper balance within this very complex system. When restrictions in the CranioSacral system are released through this treatment, the central nervous system is improved allowing it to better relieve stress and strengthen resistance to disease. Mobility is increased, calmness and emotional trauma held in cells is also frequently released. The technique was originally developed by Osteopaths for humans and has since been transferred to equines and other animals with quite amazing results.
What Can I Expect to See During A Treatment?
The horse is firstly assessed by the practitioner and he/she may ask you to walk your horse to see what areas need particular attention and point these areas out to you so that you can help see these weaknesses which will help you see the results after treatment. Some practitioners will take before and after photos for you and email them to you later which is quite valuable visual information. It is then a good idea to have a place that is comfortable for horse and practitioner and if possible free from distractions. The practitioner can feel the release of restriction or torsion, but a horse gives definite physical signs as well. The signs include yawning, licking and chewing, gas and stomach noises. Some horses will stretch as if just waking up and many times during a session a horse looks to be sleeping with the eyes half or fully closed or a blank expression with ears relaxed. In some cases when the horse stretches you might hear a slight cracking noise just like a bone has moved back into place. After treatment which can last 1-1/2 hours including assessment your practitioner may advise stretching exercises that you can apply yourself or even offer an exercise routine that could help with any weak areas still needing further attention. It is advisable to give your horse at least 24 hours rest before riding after treatment and in most cases a follow up treatment may be suggested but not always necessary.
